If you are planning to build a career in medical field,there are several advanced level courses that can be undertaken to be employed in the medical sector. By joining patient care tech classes one can be employed in hospitals, nursing homes, urgent care centers and other medical health care centers.

A patient care technician (PCT), have daily interaction with patients. They help the patients by taking and measuring various important parameters such as measuring vital signs, performing electrocardiography (ECG), blood draws, hemodialysis and other needs. Because PCTs work with patients on a regularly basis, they need to have solid communication skills and be empathetic and attentive to their needs.

The duties and the responsibilities of a patient care technicians are-  
  • Drawing blood
  • Performing catheterizations
  • Removing sutures and staples
  • Managing wound care
  • Administering ECGs
  • Operating dialysis equipment and performing treatment procedures
  • Performing emergency room skills (splints, immobilizations, nasogastric tube removal)
  • Inserting intravenous saline locks

Some of the classes included in the Patient Care Technician program includes emergency room technician, infection control, electrocardiography, renal anatomy and physiology, principles and Practices of Hemodialysis, and Communication.

Curriculum includes, but is not limited to, the following major skill areas: communication and interpersonal skills, legal and ethical responsibilities, wellness and disease concepts, safety and security procedures, response to emergency situations, personal patient care services and procedures, nutrition, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, EKG, phlebotomy, computer skills, and employability skills. Classroom and clinical experience are incorporated into the curriculum.
