For anyone enrolled in a medical training program, such as patient care tech classes, medical assistant, nursing training or practical nursing- thinking about the first day at work can be overwhelming. Will you remember the skills learned at your patient care tech classes? Will you be able to handle everything correctly? How will be the patients?

Here are a few tips that can help you in the first few weeks of your job-

1. Always carry a notepad with you- In the first few weeks, there would be a lot of new things happening with you such as you’ll be meeting new people and learning about company’s protocols. You might have a lot of questions and things to note down. Stay organized and jot down all the important things in your notepad like the questions you want to ask your supervisor, things related to your patients needs and use it to keep a note of the to-do-things.

2. Ask questions- When you are at a new job, there are a lot of things to learn every day. Most importantly you’ll learn how to take care of hospital patients or the patients assigned to you. Here are a few tips that help you with your work.

  • Read the patients care plan in advance and jot down the important points
  • Observe your supervisor how and what care he/she is giving to the patients.
  • If you don’t understand anything in the patient care plan, it is important that you    ask about it.
  • Be sure you note down everything that you do with the patient in your records.

3. Stay organized – The work of a patient care tech is very hectic. Here are some tips that can help you stay efficient at your work.

  • Keep the first ten minutes of your shift for planning the tasks of the day. Prioritizing the tasks will help you in saving time and giving you more space for work.
  • Prepare your list of supplies and take everything you need before visiting a patient’s room so that you don’t have to keep rushing back to get the things you forgot.
4. Respect your patients and colleagues- You may be taking care of patients who are totally dependent on you for basic needs like feeding, dressing, and using bathroom. Make sure you treat them with respect. Also, remember good healthcare is only possible if you have a team approach. Treat your co-workers with respect, be a helping hand, avoid gossips and negative behavior.
